How to book Chicago fine dining

Start with the people and the date. Then choose a menu, check the terms and set a reminder for the right reservation window.

Before you open a booking calendar

Agree on the guest count, a total budget and two or three acceptable dates. Ask every guest about dietary restrictions and access needs now. A table is only useful if everyone can take part in the meal.

Use our Alinea, Smyth, Ever, Kasama and Oriole guides to compare the experience you would actually book. Room choice, menu length and payment terms can matter as much as the restaurant name.

For a birthday or anniversary, decide whether the exact date matters more than the restaurant. That choice gives you a clear fallback if the first search has no availability.

Know which release calendar you are using

A monthly release opens a batch of dates; a rolling window moves forward with the calendar. These examples are not one citywide rule. Follow the official link for your chosen restaurant and verify the release before setting your reminder.

Read the terms before you pay

Check the restaurant, experience name, date, time, guest count and full amount. Establish whether you are paying a deposit or prepaying dinner, and whether a deposit is credited to the bill. Save the cancellation and transfer terms with the confirmation.

For example, Kasama publishes a $325-per-person charge for cancellations or guest-count reductions within 48 hours. Ever says sales are final and non-refundable, and asks guests to contact it about transfers. Kasama: reservations and cancellation terms; Ever: booking, access and service-charge FAQ.

Smyth announces full prepayment and a single extended Chef's Menu for visits from November 5, 2026. Terms for an earlier visit should not be carried over to that date. Smyth: menus and November booking change.

If your first choice is unavailable

Check another acceptable date, time or seating format. Use an official waitlist where offered; Ever lists one through its booking platform. Keep a second restaurant in mind, but read its cancellation terms before making a backup booking.

A waitlist request is not a reservation. Before accepting an opening, check that you can still make the time and that changing any existing plans will not create another charge.

Your booking checklist

  1. Confirm guest count, dietary fit, access and budget.
  2. Open the booking link from the restaurant's official website.
  3. Check the selected experience and complete payment terms.
  4. Save the confirmation and any change deadline in your calendar.
  5. Submit required guest information by the restaurant's deadline.
  6. Check the address and leave room for travel delays.

If dinner is the reason for a trip, secure it before building a tightly timed itinerary around it. Use the tasting-menu budget guide to check the full cost before purchase.
